Ultrasound Training For Dog Breeders

What topics are covered on our canine pregnancy scanning courses?

AUA-accredited ultrasound courses are taught by qualified sonographers only. Compared to copycat courses on the market, you will find our courses to be more thorough and intellectually challenging, but it is our job to ensure that you are left feeling confident and excited about scanning. Completion of a course with us also grants you access to lifelong support and mentoring.

Topics covered on our course include (but are not limited to):

  • How and why images appear as they do on ultrasound, so that you can interpret any image
  • Ultrasound frequency and the power of tissue harmonic imaging
  • Gain, depth and focus
  • Scanning technique, probe orientation and landmark identification
  • Common scanning pitfalls (intestines, kidneys, major blood vessels)
  • The appearance of normal pregnancy on ultrasound
  • The appearance of pyometra on ultrasound so that you know to refer immediately to a veterinarian
  • Confirming viability and calculating foetal heartrates in your own litter
  • Performing gestational age calculations
  • Ultrasonic safety, including thermal and mechanical indices

Why choose an AUA-accredited course?

Veterinarians have access to training run by vets and qualified industry leaders. For non-veterinarians, however, these training options are not readily available.

If you are not a vet but you are looking for ultrasound training, you’re probably struggling to know which courses are worthwhile, given the explosion over the last 2-3 years in the number of individuals and organisations now offering training courses, particularly in canine pregnancy scanning. In an attempt to legitimise themselves, many of them have plastered their courses with CPD accreditation badges – something which, sadly, has little or no relevance in our industry (you can read our article on the abuse of CPD accreditation in the field of non-professional ultrasound training here).

By attending a course accredited by the Animal Ultrasound Association, you can be sure that the course content has been signed off by an accredited sonographer. A sonographer is a person who holds a professional qualification in ultrasound – for example, a Masters degree or Diploma – and undergoes regular reaccreditation by a professional body. This means that the depth and quality of any such course is going to far exceed anything put together by someone without these qualifications.

This is not to say that people who do not hold such qualifications cannot be good mentors or provide excellent advice: just that learning from someone who is a specalised professional in the skill you wish to learn is going to put you in the strongest possible position when it comes to your scanning. To give you an analogy, if you wanted to learn to be an electrician, who would you choose to guide you through that journey – a qualified, practicing electrician, or a full-time accountant with a passion for DIY at the weekends?

How can I book on a course?

Upcoming courses can be viewed on our events page here, which will usually have both online and in-person options available. You can also pre-book an online training course via this link here, and somebody will contact you within 48 hours to arrange a convenient time and date for your training.

Looking for a different course?

The Animal Ultrasound Association runs and accredits ultrasound courses in canine pregnancy scanning, goat pregnancy scanning and veterinary echocardiography. We can also recommend excellent beginner and intermediate courses in abdominal ultrasound for vet nurses and veterinarians. If you need help finding a course, please get in touch.
