Ultrasound for Goat & Sheep Pregnancy Scanning

Are you a goat or sheep breeder who wants to become fully confident obtaining and interpreting pregnancy scans?

Our self-paced modules are in video, text and diagrammatic formats to suit all learning styles. As well as our online modules, you can arrange a Zoom call with a sonographer to go over your machine, and you will have experts on hand to provide a second opinion whenever you need it.

Two-year access to all training materials (can be extended free of charge at your request). All demonstrations are filmed on dairy goats. Example images are from both goats and sheep.

If you do not already own an ultrasound scanner, we strongly suggest speaking with an expert before making a purchasing decision. Email for free advice: co*****@*************************on.org .

Current syllabus includes:

Module 1: Getting Started

  • Diving right into the basics of ultrasound and goat pregnancy scanning, to get you going with your scanner as quickly as possible.
  • Ultrasound appearances
  • Introduction to ultrasound & transducers
  • Probe placement

Supplementary Information – Module 1

  • Extra reading and learning materials for those who would like more depth.
  • Introduction to ultrasound
  • How ultrasound frequency works
  • Reflections

Module 2: Optimising your image

  • Learn about the main controls that make the biggest difference to your image.
  • Your most important controls

Supplementary Information – Module 2

  • Supplementary information to support module 2.
  • Your controls in detail: focal zones
  • Your controls in detail: gain and depth
  • Your controls in depth: frequency
  • Elite 5600 / KX5600v Controls Walkthrough

Module 3: Recognising pregnancy at different stages

  • Subjective assessment of gestational age and developmental stages, as well as how to perform distance measurements, gestational age calculations, and M-mode calculations on any ultrasound machine.
  • Indirect and direct signs of pregnancy
  • Developmental walkthrough
  • Calculating gestational age
  • Calculating fetal heart rate with M-mode

Supplementary Information – Module 3

  • Supplementary information for module 3.
  • Qualitative estimation of gestational age
  • Quantitative estimation of gestational age – in depth

Module 4: Ultrasound Safety & Best Practice

  • Getting you confident with the mechanical and thermal index.
  • Thermal & Mechanical Indices
  • Round-up

Module 5: Improving your resolution

  • Now that you know the basics of scanning, you can add more advanced techniques to improve your image resolution. In this module, you will learn about what resolution really means, and how you can improve it with tissue harmonic imaging, focal points, and optimization of your dynamic range.
  • We also look at what Acoustic Power means on your scanner, and how you may wish to use it.
  • Tissue Harmonic Imaging, Resolution & Focal Zones
  • Advanced Controls

Supplementary Information – Module 5

  • The physics behind spatial resolution.
  • The Three Types of Spatial Resolution
  • Advanced Image Optimisation & Ultrasound Artefacts

Module 6: Incidental findings & hydrometra

  • When you put your probe on the doe, you will not always encounter pregnancy, of course! This module looks at other organs you may come across, as well as the finding of false or cloudburst pregnancy.
  • Kidneys and intestines
  • Cloudburst or ‘false’ pregnancy
  • The role of ultrasound in urolithiasis

Module 7: Scanning the Udder

  • A walkthrough of a scan, including the use of color Doppler, in investigating the cause of a ‘lumpy’ udder in a dairy goat.
  • Scanning the udder
  • Characteristics of a normal and abnormal udder
