Chapter 12: When is a Pregnancy Not Normal? The Case of Pyometra

Case Study: This little dog came to me at 31 days post-mating. Her scan was unremarkable, but she was clearly earlier in her pregnancy than the owner had expected, so I invited her to return in 10 – 14 days for a free re-scan so that viability could be confirmed. Unfortunately, the owner didn’t return, but did contact me a few days after her pet’s due date to say that her dog was overdue and she was worried. I advised her to take her to her veterinarian, which she did. The vet told her the dog was not pregnant and it probably wasn’t worth putting her through the stress of an x-ray, but she may as well take me up on the free re-scan offer.
